- O.E. smoca, related to smeocan "give off smoke," from P.Gmc. *smeukanan. The verb is O.E. smocian; in connection with tobacco, it is first recorded 1604, in James I's "Counterblast to Tobacco." The slang noun meaning "cigarette" is first recorded 1882. Smokestack is from 1862; smoke-eater "firefighter" is c.1930. Smoking gun in figurative sense of "incontestible evidence" is early 1970s.
